Art team finishes mural over summer

As students return to the school after a much needed summer break, some have noticed some big changes inside the building. But it is not just the inside of the building that has changed.

The wall behind the school that was once bare is now covered in paint. A small group of student artists from the school teamed up with digital art teacher Jonathan Mann and advisor Arturo Ho this summer to paint a mural.

Students began painting the mural, “Tear Down Your Walls”, in June last year. Though the group made great progress in the beginning, they faced some setbacks along the way. Rainy weather washed away a day’s worth of effort, forcing the team to redo their work.

“Our biggest problem was when it would rain and the paint didn’t dry. It would all drip down,” Mann said. “Also, the rain would hit the ground and mud splattered on the wall.”

Overall, Mann is very proud of how the hard work and dedication of the team turned out.

The biggest parts of the mural were completed in summer. Mann hopes to add to the mural in the coming months in order to enhance some of the individual features.

“I do plan on getting big rocks and putting them along the bottom of the mural to make it come out and pop,” Mann stated.

This mural is not the last the school will be hearing of the art department. Talks have started of adding another mural to the building, to decorate the front lobby and to designate a spot where graffiti artists will be free to express themselves without harming the rest of the building.
