Serving Up Success

The volleyball team gather in a huddle after their Dig Pink game.

“The chemistry that we have is building because we have known each other for 2-3 years,” senior captain, Carol Canales said.

Despite the bad start to the season, the girls volleyball team has a strong connection on and off the court. The team is stacked with serviceable players, which helps the team be supportive with each other to make them better.

This is a new season for the girls, and they want to give it their all based off the performances from last year. They have a new coach this year, but she isn’t new to the girls.

“Compared to last year it’s a lot more intense,” junior captain, Shalini Gardner said.

Since the new coach, Jennifer Raikes, has taken over as the new coach, the team is familiar with the expectation that she brings. They’ve been talkative on the court and have been really aggressive. Their practices has gone from “10 percent to 1,000 percent,” Canales said.

They have picked up that aggression from the leadership of the captains and the hard work that they put in their practices. The team has been gelling together throughout the duration of the season by going out with each other and having team bonding sessions to make their teammate relationships even stronger.

Even though it wasn’t easy taking the job as one of the leaders of the team, Shalini has learned a lot to help her as a captain for next year’s team.

“I have to be more vocal and have I to go with my instinct. Just be yourself and be loud,” Gardner said.

The team has gone up against good teams, and they’ve fought hard to show their progressive to the other school around the county. Even though the season is almost over, the team still has their expectations high until the season is over.

“We want to play each game where we all felt that we played our hardest, and make sure we gave everything,” Canales said.
