On Friday night, Springbrook High School hosted its annual Breast Cancer Awareness “Pink Out” football game—an event dedicated to honoring survivors and raising awareness across our community. On Monday, we sat down with Head Coach Russell to talk about what the night meant to him, his team, and Springbrook as a whole.
Q: What message did you hope the team sent by participating in the Pink Out event?
Coach Russell: “It was a great game honoring the survivors, and it helped spread awareness to those whose families have dealt with breast cancer. We wanted to show our support and solidarity.”
Q: As a head coach, why is supporting this cause important to you personally?
Coach Russell: “It’s important to acknowledge the message and to support it. I’m sure many people know others who have dealt with this. Supporting the cause means showing everyone that we care and that they’re not alone.”
Q: How did the team prepare for this special game, knowing its significance?
Coach Russell: “The team understood that it was about more than just football. We talked about the importance of the cause and played for something bigger than ourselves. The energy and motivation were different in the locker room.”
Q: What impact do you hope this event had on the community?
Coach Russell: “I hope it brought people together and raised awareness. It’s important for the community to see that we stand together for a cause that affects so many.”
The annual Pink Out game is a powerful reminder of how sports can unite a community around an important cause. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, and it has touched many Springbrook families. Raising awareness matters—early detection saves lives, and supporting research brings hope for better treatments and, one day, a cure.
This October, join us in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing pink every Wednesday. Whether it’s a shirt, hat, or ribbon, every bit of pink shows our unity and helps raise awareness.
The Student Government Association (SGA) will also sell Breast Cancer Awareness wristbands, pins, and 20 varieties of socks every Wednesday, starting 10/8, at lunch under the Cinderella steps. All proceeds support breast cancer research and awareness efforts. Let’s stand together and make an impact.
