Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11th, is an American holiday in which the legacy and life of millions of veterans is honored. Originally known as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of the Great War, it was later changed to Veterans Day in 1954. Since then, American communities have devoted this day to the brave and fearless men and women who have served in the military.
This federal holiday can be traced back to the ending of WWI. The war officially ended following the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting concluded 8 months prior when an armistice was called between the Allied nations and Germany on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Since then, each year on the eleventh day of November, all veterans are honored and celebrated for their service, courage, and sacrifice for their country.
What veterans day means to veterans:
Boston University gathered several active duty soldiers and veterans to reflect on the importance behind Veterans day and the impact it has on their own personal lives.
Duncan Millar, a US army soldier active on duty since 2017 added that , “More than any other day, it’s a chance to reflect on a shared bond and shared experience.”
Brendan Connors, a captain in the US Marine Corps since 2019 believes Veterans Day is “more than just a day of recognition. It’s a reminder to emulate the virtues of those who have made significant personal sacrifices for the greater good and to continuously strive to better my community and country in their honor.”
Margaret Brown, an assistant professor at the university of Boston and a current active duty soldier in the US Army said that to her, Veteran’s Day “embodies hope”. She highlights the courage and bravery of veterans, who for 249 years,“ have consistently answered the call to serve, in both times of peace and turmoil.”
School Activities:
To celebrate and honor Veterans Day, Springbrook invited parents and family members to attend classes with their students.
In our history classes, we learn the horrors and tragedies millions of Americans went through to fight for peace and a better future. We learned the true bravery of the soldiers that fought in war, the tragedies they experienced and the horrors they saw. It’s important to honor their service on this day and take a moment to appreciate the sacrifices they underwent for the wellbeing of the people of this nation.
