Because of the snow days Montgomery County experienced this winter, the school district has had to make up for the missed instructional time. Unfortunately, that means students have lost some of their summer break due to the extended school year.
Many students across Montgomery County are unhappy about the change and feel it is unfair that days are being taken from their summer vacation. For many, summer is a time to relax, travel, spend time with family, and take a break from school. With the school year now lasting longer, that time will be shortened.
I also believe the extension is unfair. Personally, I would not want to still be in school during the summer when I could be on vacation or enjoying my break.
To learn more about how students feel, I asked several students at Springbrook High School for their opinions on the extended school year. One student, Kaylah, said she feels it is unfair because the snow days were out of students’ control and should not result in a longer school year. Another student, Bridtney, agreed. She said the change is unfair not only for students, but for teachers as well. Teachers now have to remain in school until the last day instead of spending that time with their families or going on vacation.
Overall, many students feel frustrated by the extended school year and believe they are being penalized for circumstances they could not control. As the school year continues, it is clear that this decision has had an impact on both students and staff.
