Bocce and Belonging: The Unique Spirit of Springbrook’s Team

We had a discussion with Ms. Kenya Jacobs, the Bocce coach. The division tournament took place on Saturday, and although they lost, it marked the end of a successful season for the four-member team. Their hard work was evident throughout. This particular sports team is unique as it combines students from special education (SEB/LFI) and general education classes. For everyone involved, it was their inaugural year in Bocce. Despite losing the last game and the division championship, they won three games.

Mr. Feher proposed the revival of the Bocce ball team, which had not been active since the 2018-2019 season. This initiative aimed to provide students in special education classes an opportunity to participate in afterschool activities and sports. Ms. Jacobs cherished the season, particularly observing the joy the students shared. Initially bewildered, they learned and grew together, fostering a remarkable sense of camaraderie. She anticipates a larger team in the future and aspires to achieve a state championship. Springbrook also offers other corollary sports, such as pickleball in the fall and Co-Ed softball in the spring, open to all students.

The possibility of offering (Student Service Learning) opportunities to manage the teams or work with students with disabilities is under consideration. An assistant coach, Gary Rosen, made valuable contributions. Practices were conducted in the hall outside Ms. Jacobs’ office. Despite the need for concentration during play, the team appreciated the energetic support from the crowds, including the cheerleading team, wrestling, and basketball spectators. The vibrant atmosphere was boosted by the enthusiastic presence of their student peers.

The sport of Bocce is characterized by its simplicity, yet precision in every move is crucial. Ms. Jacobs describes it as a “very laid-back, chill, lowkey sport.” The corollary experience imparts valuable lessons about sportsmanship, teamwork, and effective communication with individuals with disabilities. Learning to rephrase sentences for better understanding is a particularly valuable skill. Being part of the Springbrook community has been a rewarding experience for the team, and their inclusion in pep rallies has added to their sense of belonging.
