A small team has a big heart

How well can a sports team can do with only one sub?

Well the answer is a 4-1 record for Springbrook’s varsity field hockey team. The ambitious team has gotten off to an excellent start to the season despite only having 12 players.

Though having 12 players doesn’t soundlike an advantage for an 11 man sport, this team sees its shortage of players as a positive thing. Many of the players say it makes practice easier because they can all get more drill repetitions, one on one coaching and everyone gets to play.

“Even though we don’t have a lot of players, we have a lot of heart and athleticism to keep us in the game for a whole 60 minutes,” junior captain Beira Ho said.

Having just 12 players adds to the team chemistry immensely. For the most part, the team is made up of returning players so they already know how to play off of one another.

“For the most part, we all have played last year together on varsity and have only moved up two girls since then. This means that we already have had a whole year to bond and connect as a field hockey family,” senior captain Sophia Cote stated.

After last season’s 10-3 record  these motivated girls plan to not only maintain their prior success but surpass it. Last year, the team went to the regional championship game and lost to Quince Orchard. This year, the team is looking forward to the state championship game.

“I think that our goal for this year is to get the state title. Exactly half of our team are seniors this year which means that if we could go to college with the a state title under our belts; it would mean so much,” Cote said.
