Why Him? More like Why This Movie?

Spoiler alert! This past weekend I saw “Why him”? that just recently came out late December.

My overall rating is five James Franco’s out of ten.

The premise of the film is very simple. During the holidays, Ned travels to California to visit his daughter Stephanie. While he is there, he meets his biggest nightmare: her boyfriend Laird. Even though Laird is a billionaire, Ned disapproves of his freewheeling attitude and unfiltered language. Embarrassing things happen at the dinner table.

The movie starts off very funny, Stephanie is facetiming her dad during his birthday and Laird walks in naked in the back. And that’s where the parents find out about Laird. After that, there was no “haha” moments. I sat in the theater for the other hour and 20 minutes with a blank stare and trying to find humor in it all.

The storyline was also repetitive. It oscillates between Laird performing unfiltered behavior during the family holiday, to Ned being mad, and to Stephanie trying to calm everyone down.

Not to mention, the climax wasn’t very intriguing (if there even was one). The whole time I was searching for the “OMG” moment, or when there was a turn of events. That moment came in the end after I was over the movie and wanted to go home.

The climax was when Stephanie and Laird get married in the end, after the dad, Ned, said no to giving his blessings. This all happened in the last 20 minutes of the movie.

The film had a very long and dragging timeline of events. There was no apparent climax. It was a flat storyline that didn’t develope. The story line got tiring after a while and the movie wasn’t funny for being a comedy.

Also felt that the difference between Laird and Stephanie regarding their personalities and looks was too unbelievable. Stephanie was very outgoing and more put together than Laird. She also had a better personality. Laird was very laid back and carefree. It did make the movie a tad bit more interesting, but at the same time I found it more weird
than interesting.

Overall, if the movie had a better climax, storyline and more events that happened it would be a solid 8 out of 10.
