2016 Athletes of the Year: breakouts and fails

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

MLB

Breakout Of The Year: 3rd Baseman Jose Ramirez – Cleveland Indians  (.312 Avg, 22 SB, 76 RBIs)

If you asked a friend if they saw this kind of season coming from Ramirez, and they said they did, you might want to go to vegas with that person. Ramirez, who batted just .219 last year, was a key factor in the Indians making it to the World Series this year and he is just 24 years old. We’ll see if Ramirez can hold those numbers up this summer.

Fail Of The Year: Outfielder Bryce Harper – Washington Nationals (.243 Avg, 24 Home Runs, 86 RBIs)

Harper was far worse than expectations this year. Harper, the former MVP who hit for a .330 average, 42 Home Runs and 99 RBIs last season, was dealing with a lot of injuries this season. But this definitely was the season he was looking for before his Free Agency year. Harper will look to put up more stunning numbers next year.

NBA

Breakout Of The Year: Small Forward Giannis Antetokounmpo – Milwaukee Bucks (22.7 PPG, 9.2 RPG, 5.8 APG)

Antetokounmpo, also known as The Greek Freak, has gotten off to a fiery start this year. Each year he has gotten better since he has entered the league in 2013, but has never been taken into consideration in the MVP talk. This year he should definitely.

Fail Of The Year: Small Forward Carmelo Anthony – New York Knicks (21.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 2.8 APG)

Maybe age to Anthony, but even the numbers he is putting up this season is just not himself. Carmelo has disappeared the last couple of seasons. Maybe it’s time for us to take the “Superstar” tag away from the 9 time All-Star.

NHL

Breakout Of The Year: Winger Nikolaj Ehlers – Winnipeg Jets (10 G, 21 A, -1 +/-)

The young winger for the Jets has really shown off his skill this year after a rocky start to his career last season only posting 38 Points in 72 Games. But Ehlers has really picked up the pace this season with 31 points in 39 games. Give credit where it’s due to linemates Mark Scheifele and Patrick Laine for assisting him, but still a very nice season for the Denmark native.

Fail Of The Year: Goalie Brian Elliott – Calgary Flames (3.01 GAA, .893 SV%, 7-9-1 record)

Calgary was hoping to get a goalie from the Blues that would fix the horrific problem they have had with goalies for the past couple years. Instead they got a player that not only loss his job in the first 2 weeks to his backup in St. Louis, but also looking for yet another Netminder. Calgary does has a subpar defence but the way Elliott has played in a nice way hasn’t been good. Keep looking Calgary you’ll find one eventually.

NFL
Breakout Of The Year: Running Back Ezekiel Elliott – Dallas Cowboys (15 Rushing TDs, 1,631 YDs, 5.1 AVG)

A rookie season for the ages for the Ohio State Alumni. Credit to his Offensive Line, who was a big part in his historic season, but still just a great all around season for the 21 year old. The Cowboys also struck gold in last years draft with Elliott falling down to 4th in the draft and also picking up QB Dak Prescott in the 4th round. I don’t think the Cowboys will be switching up their scouting team anytime soon.

Fail Of The Year: QuarterBack Cam Newton – Carolina Panthers (19 TDs, 14 INTs, 75.8 Passer Rating)

The defending MVP definitely surpassed expectations…of how bad we all thought he could be. It must be the year of MVP digression with the seasons Bryce Harper and Cam Newton put together. The Atlanta native managed to be 28th in Passers Rating this season,  lower than Cleveland Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. Carolina will be searching for the Cam Newton they saw in 2015 all offseason.
