During the holiday season when you are bored, with family/ friends, or when you want to be in the holiday spirit- here are some classic holiday movies you must see.

1. “Elf” (2003)

The premise of the movie is a fun take on the fish out of water tale. The script is mostly pretty sharp, and the central performance from Will Ferrell is one of the funniest comedic roles of all time. He absolutely sells it, and you honestly believe every minute of it and it will keep you smiling throughout the film.

2. “Best Man’s Holiday” (2013)

This movie is hilarious, yet emotional at the same time. Make sure you are in store for an emotional rollercoaster. The cast feels like a family and the movie touches base on many social issues as well.

3. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965)

Perhaps the most renowned holiday TV special ever, this Christmas movie is a classic. In this animated feature, Charlie Brown goes in search of true Christmas spirit after decrying the material greed that often overshadows the holidays.

4. “Home Alone” (1990)

After 8-year-old Kevin McCallister is accidentally left at home when his family goes on a Christmas vacation, he finds it exhilarating at first, but lonely as the holiday approaches. Although it may be unrealistic, the child takes on 2 burglars in a way that will leave you surprised and dying with laughter.

5. “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000)

Of course, there is a classic 1966 cartoon TV special with Boris Karloff as the Grinch, but this version with Jim Carrey is a must see. This film reaches the pinnacle of family films being both creepy and heartwarming at the same time.    

6. “The Polar Express” (2004)

This movie encapsulates the curiosity of childhood and has amazing visuals. The movie is about a young boy who embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express. During his adventure he learns about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas.

7. “The Santa Clause” (1994)

When a man inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place. This movie is such a holiday classic and is non-stop entertaining and fun.This movie is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

8. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (2003)

Director Tim Burton brings his twisted take on the holiday season to this animated film about Jack Skellington (who presides over Halloween Town) wandering into the foreign Christmas town. This is a great movie for people who like both Christmas and Halloween since it has a dark twist to the usually lighthearted Christmas movies.    

9. “The Muppet Christmas Carol” (1992)

The Muppet adaptation of the classic story is fun, sweet, and definitely appropriate for the whole family. It is a re-telling of the classic Dickens novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ and Michael Caine is cast superbly as Scrooge. The muppet characters added wonderful humor and charm.  

10. “A Christmas Carol” (2009)

An animated retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption. It is an a amazing movie with superb animations and special effects.
