Track team sprints to victory

Now that the snow has melted and the freezing winter is gone, spring is the best time to run outside again. The track and field team is having a good start so far with three consecutive wins for the boys’ squad and two for the girls. The Screaming Eagle invitational meet was an event in which the Blue Devils competed with 24 other schools and won 20 medals.

“The season is going great for me and for the team in general. I’m really excited because we can really go far this season,” senior Dawit Tegegn said.

In addition to the successful season the team is having lately, the relationship among all members of the team is in good terms and all of them are on the same page, according to Tegegn.

“Just like the boys’ side, our squad is also doing very well with two victories and only one defeat, losing to Paint Branch”, senior and co-captain Diamond Bruns said. Bruns also mentioned that the relay team qualified for the Penn relays.

“Individually, my season so far has been pretty decent. This past meet, I made a new personal record on high jump, jumping 4’10”, Bruns said when asked about her individual season.

Furthermore, Bruns mentioned that she gets along with her fellow teammates and maintains good relationship with them.

“The relationship I have with my teammates is very open, respectful, kind and generous and as the co-captain of the team, I try to set an example and be the ideal captain for my team,” Bruns stated.

This year’s outdoor track and field team contains mostly freshmen. However, it also includes students from different grade levels who played other spring sports in previous years and intend to do track this year.

“That is something I’m debating, but right now, I’m leaning towards a ‘no’ since it takes a lot of time and dedication. I think that doing track in college could hinder my academics since there will be a lot of traveling,” Bruns stated when asked on whether or not she’ll continue doing track while in college.
