Taylor Swift’s 1989 is 1980-fine!

It’s no secret that Taylor Swift is extremely talented. With her fourth album, entitled Red, selling over a million copies in its first week, Swift has a lot to live up to with the release of her fifth album 1989.
Swift is an amazing singer/songwriter and I thoroughly enjoyed this album. What I liked most is that she draws on her personal experiences and turns them into hit songs. She does not “sugar coat” anything and is fearless when it comes to her lyrics.
Although there is much controversy over Swift always writing about her past boyfriends, I think it is very interesting to see her side of the story. “This Love,” a ballad on 1989, states lyrics like “your kiss, my cheek, I watched you leave – your smile, my ghost, fell to my knees.”
Although one can never be certain about who she is singing about, many people like to link these songs to ex-boyfriends Taylor Lautner, Joe Jonas, John Mayer and Harry Styles. Whomever it may be about, I like the fact that her songs are lyrically driven and have a catchy tune. I enjoy the puzzle of trying to figure who the song is about.
My current favorite on the album is a ballad entitled “Wildest Dreams.” This song describes a romantic relationship with a guy that, after some time, ended. Swift hopes that the guy remembers everything that went into the relationship. Personally, I connect with its lyrics and it is definitely a song that gets stuck in your head.
Another song I enjoy from her new album is a mid-tempo song entitled “Blank Space.”
This song talks about how Swift’s ex-boyfriends think she is insane and obsessive. It’s a fun twist on a not-so-serious song. Some lyrics in the song state, “so it’s gonna be forever or it’s gonna go down in flames.” It is refreshing to see an artist like Taylor be able to joke about her romantic relationships.
Overall, I find the album to be a diary of Swift’s life: very revealing and personal. I love the songs and think it is a great fifth album. I can’t wait to see what Swift comes up with next.
