Navigating Early College Adventures for a Dual Enrollment Journey

Navigating+Early+College+Adventures+for+a+Dual+Enrollment+Journey

Early College is a dual enrollment program designed for high school students aiming to graduate with both an associate’s degree and a high school diploma. Students attend all their classes at the Montgomery College campus, with applications accepted in the sophomore year, and the program commencing in the junior year. Participants can choose from any of the three Montgomery College campuses based on their preferred major.

The Early College initiative provides a unique opportunity to acquire 60 transferable credits applicable to all public colleges in Maryland and numerous institutions outside the state. Choosing a major from a provided list, students receive personalized plans from program coordinators to meet both high school and college graduation requirements. These coordinators act as counselors for all matters related to Montgomery College, offering guidance throughout the program.

A common concern among students is the separation from high school friends while being on a college campus. Despite this, the Early College program adopts a ‘cohort’ format, ensuring that students remain within the same major-related group from program entry until graduation.

Emilio Sanchez San Martin, a junior at Springbrook and a freshman Data Science student, attends most of his classes at the Montgomery College Rockville Campus. Emilio appreciates the strong sense of community support on campus, stating, “The support system is there… If you need help with studying or homework or you’re just struggling in general, they have a place for you to go and get help.” On the Rockville campus, resources like the Ackerman Center provide assistance for STEM classes, offering textbooks, tutoring, and quiet study spaces.

However, Emilio notes a downside of Early College, mentioning, “You’re not at Springbrook anymore, so there’s fewer chances to communicate with your high school.” He misses school events, especially those happening during the day, such as college fairs and club activities.

Anaya Hall, a sophomore at Springbrook and a freshman Cybersecurity student, loves the freedom and flexibility that Dual Enrollment offers.  She says, “I have the freedom to choose classes that pique my interest and help fill credits for high school.”

Lesli Lopez Sanchez states, “Dual enrollment enables high school students like me to accumulate college credits without incurring additional expenses. This experience not only imparts valuable knowledge but also equips students with the necessary skills to excel in college-level classes, fostering improved collaboration skills and adaptability. By providing exposure to higher education at no cost, this opportunity alleviates some financial burden and allows students to explore and expand their potential.”

Andriana D’Costa, another junior at Springbrook and a freshman Surgical Technology student, attends classes at the Montgomery College Silver Spring/Takoma Park campus. Her favorite aspect of Early College is the specialized classes tailored to her desired field. For instance, taking an anatomy class at MC allows her to participate in real dissections, which she finds particularly engaging.

While the Early College program has its pros and cons, Emilio and Andriana highlight its overall benefits. Freshmen interested in the program are encouraged to contact their school’s dual enrollment program assistant for more information.
