Springbrook announces creation of Athletics Hall of Fame

Members of the Hall of Fame committee have announced that it will be creating an athletic Hall of Fame. Anyone may nominate a former athlete, coach, athletic director, or community member who has had a significant impact on Springbrook athletics. Principal Samuel Rivera came up with the idea of the Hall of fame and shared it with athletic director Rob Wendel as well as staff members Gary Frace and Joyce Amatucci.

“We are now accepting nominations. They are due by March 1,” World language teacher Joyce Amatucci said.

Just like other halls of fame, there are rules for someone to be nominated. For example, a nominated athlete must be out of Springbrook for seven years and their accomplishments outside of Springbrook, such as in college,  may not be taken into account. The most recent class of Springbrook that a nominee may be a part of is the class of 2006-2007, which excludes Springbrook’s most recent state championships earned by the boys’ basketball team from 2008-2010.

“We’ve been working on this since April when Mr.Rivera came to us with the idea. Our team has been doing a really great job of taking it and running,” Social studies teacher Gary Frace said.

All staff members at Springbrook are required to participate in a action team and Frace was granted permission to make the Hall of Fame project its own action team. Members of the action team include math teacher Mr. Ishikawa, physical education teacher Mr. Ferguson, current athletic director Mr.Wendel, and former athletic director Mr. Lane.

Since 1962, Springbrook has won 19 team state championships, and has had 69 individual state champions. The Brook’s last individual that won a state title that may be nominated for the Hall of Fame is Erin Ostrove who earned the title in Gymnastics all around in 2005.

“We’re thinking that the first class will be a size of about 10 people but Springbrook has been open since 1960, so we have to look at over 50 years of great athletic history here,” Frace said.

The inductees will be honored at the home football game on September 9 of next year and will have a banquet and a formal induction the following day September 10.
