Saturday was the night to be a boxing fan. Especially the anticipation for the possible “Fight of the Year” between two undefeated welterweight champions. WBA champion, Keith “One Time” Thurman (28-0-0, 22 KO), faced WBC champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (33-1-0, 19 KO) to determine who was more skillful to achieve the title of Unified Champion. The bout had been located in Brooklyn, New York at the Barclays Center, arena of the Brooklyn Nets.

Both fighters are known for their consistency, power, and boxing mentality and the boxing world was entertained with these features. Thurman easily defeated Danny Garcia via split decision and unified the WBA and WBC world champion belts. The scorecard had favored Thurman with the scores of 116-112, 113-115, 115-113.

Of course, Danny Garcia wasn’t happy with the results. They had believed that the fight was already favored to Thurman due to the Las Vegas “betting books” (Vegas Insider).

“I thought I pressed the fight, I thought I did enough to get the decision but, you know, only one judge had it my way and it is what it is.” Garcia said.

His father, Angel Garcia, also believed the fight was a robbery.
“You can’t win a fight running, bro. He hit Danny with a good short in the first, it was a good shot, Danny sucked it up and came back on the second, was there in front of him. Then he ran all the way from the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th. How you win the fight?” Angel Garcia said. “I want, really, Danny to retire today. I really want him to retire. Rematch, no, because we don’t believe in that. The only one we gave a rematch to was Morales.”

The only Garcia who had taken the L harshly was obviously Papa Garcia.

Overall, Boxing is business. You win some, you lose some but it all depends on skills and consistency. Even though belts expands the popularity of fighters, it does not dictate the fighters having guaranteed undefeated records. Keith Thurman is now on the mandatory hit list for multiple superstar boxers. Beating Danny Garcia is just adding pace towards his welterweight stride to greatness. So look out everyone because Keith “One Time” Thurman is a threat not to be messed with.
