Fundraising effort scores in a big way

Year-long fundraising effort secures new scoreboard for stadium

After a year of fundraising, the athletic department plans to buy a scoreboard for the stadium field.

We currently believe that we have enough money.  We are awaiting approval from MCPS to move forward,” athletic director Dan Feher said.

To get approved by MCPS, Dan Feher said,“In order to gain approval through MCPS, we have to secure at least 3 competing bids[, and] we did that.”

The fundraiser isn’t only for cosmetics, but it also has some issues including, its fields are limited- so some fields of the scoreboard can only be used for football. Feher noted that the new scoreboard will fix this issue by “offer[ing] the flexibility to show categories for football as well as soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse, all of which play on the stadium field.”

A new scoreboard also offers flexibility.

“The current system is hard-wired, meaning it can only be operated from the press box… [While] a new scoreboard will operate with a wireless signal, increasing the flexibility of use and potentially improving the ability for referees on the field to communicate and work with the clock operator,” Feher said.

The funds were generated through various athletic department fundraisers such as the mulch sale, food sales at the pit, and the concession stand, as well as through various individual donors directly to the cause.

Now, the only thing left for Feher to do do is wait.

“Nothing is for sure but we hope for it to be usable by the first game [in the fall season.]” “[As of right now 6/2/2016] I have received verbal okays but nothing written,” said Feher. Once he gets written permission from MCPS, the athletic department will have the new scoreboard installed.
