A new school year often brings many changes. Springbrook High School’s media center is just one of the things that are different this year.

For the last few years, library media specialist Julie Simon knew that she wanted to change the layout of the library, but every year there was some obstacle, such as summer school, preventing any changes to be made. This year, however, Simon finally had time to focus on the plans for the library.

“I expected this to take at least two or three years,” Simon said. “But when I talked to Mr. Rivera about my ideas he said that we should do it all now.”

Over the summer, Simon worked with a county carpenter and school business administrator Margaret Grasso to adjust the media center.

New features include sound booths, monitors, and furniture.

“I’ve always wanted to get furniture, and we had so many kids sitting on the floor. I wanted the students to have a nice place to just sit and read, ” Simon explained.

The furniture is one of the most noticeable changes and is receiving mostly positive feedback from the students.

“I think that the sofas are a nice addition to the library. They are really comfortable and make it look nicer,” senior Nicole Kalitsi said.

Despite the many changes, the library will continue remodeling. In September, bar stools and power strips will be added for students to bring in and charge their laptops and tablets.

“It’s cool that we’ll be able to bring in our own computers soon. I’m excited for the new changes,” junior Kaleab Getachew said.
