Stetson offers recommendations to staff

In his position as acting principal, Dr. Frank Stetson, developed a list of recommendations based on his observations over the past five months. Stetson shared his list at a recent meeting with teachers and staff and will soon share it with the incoming principal.

Among Stetson’s recommendations are plans to create stronger academic support for students in AP and IB classes and for student-athletes. This goal would be achieved by creating a club dedicated to doing homework. Stetson also suggested that student tutoring should be more regulated and formal.

“I think supporting athletes is important because while we try to engage in after school activities and represent our school, we struggle with the amount of work we are given and have a hard time managing it,” sophomore and three-sport athlete Samantha Bryant said.

Stetson also believes that there should be more opportunities for students to take higher level classes. Currently, counselors and teachers can restrict students’ admission to class, but with Stetson’s plan, parents and the students’ own expressed interest would be determining factors in whether or not students can enroll in a higher level class.

Stetson also suggested that there be more opportunities to create cultural awareness and celebrations to instill cultural pride into students. He stressed that there also be more leadership opportunities and education in the form of classes and clubs.

“I believe this is great because there’s a lot of students who have the tools to be leaders but need the push or opportunities to develop them,” junior Maylek Arthur said.

For staff, Stetson recommended that the main office be reorganized and that a functioning testing committee be created to focus on stronger test achievement for students.

Overall, Stetson has noticed a need for greater support of the student body in order to push kids to their fullest potential. If Springbrook’s future principal is able to achieve this, the environment of our school will allow students to thrive in all aspects of student life.
