Internship program provides great experience

Springbrook High School’s Internship Program is designed to prepare seniors who have a career goal in mind. They can work at a job involving their area of interest for 8-12 hours a week to help them gain a better understanding of the field they wish to pursue.

To participate in the program, students must complete an application at the end of their junior year.

“Basically what we are looking for are seniors who are career focused and who are in good academic standing and will be able to leave for part of their school day in their senior year,” director of the program Sheri Lowe said.

The program provides hands on experience of being in the world of work. Usually when people decide on a career, they do not get all the important facts or details about the job. By participating in the

Internship Program, students not only gain experience, but also gain respect for the adults they work for.

“I work for a school with kids that have special needs called Rock Terrace and being able to talk to these kids, you learn a lot from their struggles and it really makes you look up to the teachers because it’s not an easy job,” senior Daniela Pacheco said.

However, there are many students in the Internship Program that do not understand the concept of the class.

“I joined the Internship Program one for the half day schedule, and two because I wanted to work with kids,” Pacheco said.

The class provides an advantage; students can use the spare time given to them to go out and try out new jobs.

“If kids take advantage of the opportunity and don’t just say, ‘oh, I just want to get out of school early,’ then they can really invest their time into something important,” Lowe explained.

The more students that  join the Internship Program as the years go by, the more students leave high school knowing exactly what they want to do in college.
