Senior guard Delaino Jessup gets ready for a match against Richard Montgomery.

Last Friday, on January 26, the Blue Devils faced off against their consortium rivals, the Paint Branch Panthers, in an intense match. As members of the local community packed the house to witness two of the top teams in the country face off for the second time this season, Springbrook beat Paint Branch away with a final score of 80-76, advancing the Devils to a record of 15-2 (now 16-2). Quinnipiac University commit Matthew Balanc led Springbrook to victory with 29 points, and senior guard Anthony Desruisseau followed with 13 points.

After suffering a tough loss to Paint Branch at home just a few weeks prior, the Blue Devils were able to get their revenge. The Devils maintained a constant lead throughout the entire game, aided with a strong start in the first quarter. Even with the absence of head coach Darnell Meyers, who was ill that night, Springbrook was able to bring it home against a tough adversary.

This Wednesday, the Blue Devils also defeated Montgomery Blair’s Blazers in a conference match win, making division champions.

The Springbrook community has some very high expectations for the Devils this postseason, and so do members of the team. Senior captain Matthew Balanc told the Blueprint that his goal is to “Go to states and win a state championship.”

Quite frankly, Balanc’s goal might not be too far off, as The Washington Post has ranked the team in their High School Top 20 list. With a strong record of 16-2, and a competitive roster, the Blue Devils may see a postseason similar to their 2008-2010 championship days.
