Springbrook’s Bocce Ball team brings back the heat

If you are a student at Springbrook, you might have heard of our bocce ball team. Bocce ball is a winter sport which had its origins in Rome, Italy and was later adopted by America.

Normally, it is played in sand, but for a high school teams it is played in the gym with two teams. Each team has four balls and they need to get it as close to the yellow ball, called the “palina”. The closest ball is one point and if you have two balls in the same area it is another point.

Players can get a total of 4 points in a round. The bocce ball team earned a record of 3-5 last year. However, two years ago they placed second in the state.

Although the team’s newcomers may not have much experience, they have important responsibilities and are vital assets to the team.

Simon “Rookie of the Year” Loewenstein is going to be counted on for setting up the captains and defending the team’s palina.
Key returning player and team captain David “All Day” Lane is one of the best in the county averaging 8.5 points per game.
Both players and coaches have a positive outlook for the season.

“We’re looking to win county championship and states. We want to go all the way and be the team to beat,” Coach Douglas Remer said. The returning players include Corey “Firestoppr” Balmoris. He is arguably the best player in county to stop opposition from scoring.

He also holds opponents to no more than 2 points a round. Eric “Eagle Eye” Beckford is a lefty who electrifies the crowd with skill and smoothness. Beckford always seems to find the palina and is a sharpshooter that averages 4 points a game. With a team like this, there is no doubt that bocce will have an impressive season this school year.
